Taking Part — Risk and Health

Last Updated: 29 October 2026

Draft — not reviewed by a solicitor.

Shown when you book and agreed before your first class.

1. What acro actually involves

Acro means lifting, balancing on and being balanced on by other people, usually at height, usually with a spotter. It is a physical activity with a real risk of injury, including serious injury.

That is not small print. It is what the activity is.

Most people are fine. Some people get hurt. We manage the risk with progressions, prerequisites, spotting and mats — we do not eliminate it, and nobody teaching acro honestly can.

2. What you confirm when you book

By booking you confirm that:

  • you are 18 or over;
  • you are taking part voluntarily, and you understand and accept the risks described above;
  • you are physically fit to take part, and not aware of any medical reason you should not;
  • you will work within your own limits, and stop when your body says so rather than when the set finishes;
  • you will follow reasonable instructions from teachers and spotters;
  • you will not take part under the influence of alcohol or drugs, including medication that affects balance, coordination or judgement;
  • you will tell the teacher, before the class, about anything affecting what you should be doing.

3. What we need to know

You do not have to tell us anything. But a teacher who does not know about your shoulder cannot program around it.

There is an optional box on the booking form for this. Use it, or tell the teacher before the class starts — whichever you prefer. Please tell us about:

  • recent or ongoing injuries, and anything you are rehabbing;
  • surgery in the last 12 months;
  • pregnancy, or recently having given birth;
  • dizziness, fainting, blood pressure or heart conditions;
  • joint hypermobility, dislocations or instability;
  • epilepsy, or any condition where a fall carries particular risk.

Anything you tell us is seen only by the people teaching and running your class, is deleted 7 days after the class, and never leaves our systems. What we keep afterwards is only the fact that you confirmed the statements in clause 2 — no medical detail. See clause 3 of the Privacy Notice.

If something changes between booking and class — a new injury, feeling unwell on the day — tell the teacher before you start.

4. Physical contact and consent

Acro is a contact activity. Basing, flying and spotting mean being held, lifted and caught by other people, and hands-on spotting and adjustment by a teacher are a normal part of teaching it safely. Teachers will say what they are doing and why.

You can say no to any physical contact, at any time, for any reason, without explaining. "No", "not that" or "stop" ends it straight away, with no awkwardness and no effect on your place in the class. You can change your mind mid-skill, and after having said yes before.

  • The same applies between participants. Nobody touches anybody without a clear yes, every time — including a spotter stepping in, unless someone is about to fall.
  • If you would prefer verbal-only coaching, tell the teacher at the start. They will ask before any contact and teach you accordingly. Some skills cannot be spotted safely without contact; if so, the teacher will tell you and you can choose to sit that part out.
  • If anything feels wrong — from a teacher or from another participant — tell the teacher, an organiser, or our safeguarding lead at safeguarding@southlondonacro.co.uk. See the Safeguarding Policy.

4a. Our right to decline participation

Teachers may decline to let someone take part, or ask them to sit out part of a class, where they judge it unsafe — including late arrival past the warm-up, apparent intoxication, or an injury that makes the material inappropriate.

This is a safety decision and does not entitle you to a refund. We will always explain it.

5. If you are pregnant, post-surgical, or managing a condition

Please talk to us before booking.

We are not medically qualified and cannot advise you. What we can do is tell you honestly what a class involves, so you can take that to someone who can.

6. Your own judgement

You decide whether a class is right for you.

Where a class lists prerequisites or a level, they are requirements, not suggestions. The material assumes them. Turning up to a class well above your level is unsafe for you and for whoever is basing or flying with you — the risk you take is not only your own, which is why we may move you to a different class or decline entry.

7. Insurance

Nothing we arrange covers your personal injury, your income, or your equipment. If that matters to you — particularly if you are self-employed and a wrist injury stops you working — personal accident cover is worth having. That is a genuine gap and we would rather point at it than let you assume otherwise.

8. What this document does and does not do

Agreeing to this does not sign away your legal rights.

Nothing here limits or excludes our liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, for fraud, or for anything else that cannot lawfully be limited. A clause that tried to would be void, so we have not written one.

What this document does is make sure you know what you are taking part in, and that you have told us what we need to know to teach you safely. If you are injured because we failed to take reasonable care, this changes nothing about your position.

9. Under 18s

Our classes are for adults, 18 and over. We are not currently set up to take under-18 bookings, and we would rather say so plainly than have someone turn up and be turned away.

If you want to bring a young person, contact us first. We may be able to arrange something appropriate, with the consent and supervision that properly requires.

10. In an emergency

If you are hurt, we will give first aid where we can and call emergency services where needed. If you have given us an emergency contact, we may contact them — that is why we ask.
